Final Fantasy Grinding

So Final Fantasy definitely takes some grinding. The first boss was easy and I haven't really gotten anywhere in the story past the first boss and the next town.  I beat up some pirates and took their ship so now I can go to many more destinations.  You get into fights in the sea which I didn't expect. I have been training outside the first town of Pravoka for a very long time. I am 13 hours in and level 13/14.  I am not sure how hard the game actually is; I just know it takes a very long time to gain any levels.  While I was leveling I traveled East of Pravoka, then North up a peninsula. Anyone reading this who is very familiar with Final Fantasy I will know what I am talking about. I was level and and wandering around and ending up in a fight with creatures called Necrotaurs, they were twice as tough as anything I had been fighting and killed me, first time in FFI that my party died. So I avoided that area. I leveled up fighting normal monsters in the mountain area closer to Pravoka until level 11, around level 10 all my characters seemed quite a bit stronger especially my monk, Sabin. So I went back up to the peninsula and couldn't find these monsters, searched for a long time, nothing. So I looked up the monsters (about to go on a tangent but holding it off until I finish this story) Necrotaurs and found out they were located in a very specific top corner(only 4 tiles at the very top) of the peninsula known as "Power Peninsula", the monsters there, Necrotaurs and others, are much tougher and give you much more experience and money than the other monsters in the area. I also went to Elfheim(haven't progressed the story yet, just for shopping) and purchased better armor, weapons, and especially magic. That has helped a lot in "Power Peninsula".
Now back to my tangent, I plan to play most of these Final Fantasy games that I haven't played before as if it was back when I was a kid, so no strategy guides and very little online help unless I have just questions about the game or am in a very serious pickle during the game. I have gone back and forth on this point: on one hand I want to play these games and get as close to the original experience as I can without the game, story, or challenge being ruined by doing too much research online; on the other hands I have a lot of Final Fantasy to play so a little help would definitely keep me from getting bored and burned out, also some of these games I may only play this once so if I am just going to play them once I might as well beat it while finding the secrets and power weapons... As of right now though I am going for the original feel and very limited outside assistance with the ones I haven't played.
As I train part of me wishes I would have gone with a different party, especially with my play style of grinding hard and beating most of the game senseless with physical attacks and not using much magic. I feel a better lineup could have been two warriors or one warrior one monk, two red mages, or  one red mage and one white mage.  Since the white and black mages are so selective in their strengths and weaknesses I find that they rarely help during battles and spend most of the time trying to keep each other alive. The red mage would have been a better pick because he is not great at magic, but he can still learn it and he is not completely useless in physical battles. The warrior so far is superior to the monk, however the last few levels the monk has been getting stronger attack, but the warrior has great armor, health, and great attack. The monk only has a good attack. He was missing pretty often so I took the nunchuks off and now he hits pretty much as strong but way more often. While I was pondering the potential job classes I realised that I have never really used Red Mages, I don't know why, I honestly have never given them a chance, and I was trying to think to see if I have any favorite red mages from other final fantasy games and came upon an odd conclusion that I have never realised until now.  I think that Cloud from Final Fantasy VII might be a red mage. He is good at everything and actually has no weakness. He is some sort of Super Red Mage. Some people may have already realised this a long time ago, but I never really thought about it,with his stats and skills in battle with magic, physical, and special moves, he really is in his own class of character. Looking into that more, I found some gaming sites class him as a "buffed red mage" or a "Hero" class.
So that is my experience so far, all characters level 14 now and once I get to 15 I will most likely move full steam ahead, hopefully cruising out a good portion of the story line before I need to have a training session again. That will mostly likely be my next post....
