Dishonored 2/ Mad Max/ Bastion....other thoughts on the year to come.

So last week there was a free trial of Dishonored 2, you could play the first 3 levels. So I stopped playing Mass Effect to play Dishonored 2. I liked it quite a bit, not as much as I was hoping. I am assuming that part of the reason I did not love it was that a few gaming podcasts I listen to kept going on about how good it is and some people were arguing for it to win game of the year from last year over games like Overwatch. I play Overwatch and love almost everything about it. So I was excited to play Dishonored 2, something about it just didn't quite click for me. I think part of the issue is that a majority of the fun that games journalist had with the game was that I don't play games in the way that this game wants you to play. By that I mean I think they want you to be extremely sneaky and try not to be seen and then once you are seen to use all of the powers and magic and abilities to fight your way out of the chaotic battle. I just don't play like that. In almost every game I chose to play as a warrior, I usually ignore the magic and abilities and just out play, fight, or shoot all of the enemies I come across. In mass effect, for instance I put every single ability point I get into soldier abilities and just become more and more proficient with the guns of my choice. I also don't sneak around, I show up, I kick butt, and I move on. It is just how I play. So I liked Dishonored 2 and I see why some people love it, but just not my game.

After moving on from Dishonored 2 I put Mass Effect back in, but for some reason I just could not get back into the game and didn't feel as connected to the characters as I did just 2 weeks ago. So, I moved onto a game I got fairly recently, however it is a couple years old, Mad Max. This game flew well under the radar and is actually quite good. A good open world, fun car combat, decent hand to hand action, and the writing and dialogue was done extremely well. I love how you can upgrade both your character and his stats/skills and also upgrade your car, whichever you choose to do. The only issue is that after playing so much Mass Effect I just felt overwhelmed by jumping into another massive open world.

So, I was looking through my games and I remembered that I download Bastion a few weeks ago when it was on sale and I decided that maybe an indie was a good idea to cleanse my pallet. It was a great decision. That game has great art style, fun action, the narration during the game is extremely clever and charming, the music is ridiculous. I have never played a game and dug the music so much. In most games if the music is pretty well done you barely notice and at times it enhances the scene slightly, I found myself just grinning from ear to ear in the first hour of this game just appreciating the music and how well it fits with the game and just how much work obviously went into making this game special and unique. If anyone reading this hasn't played Bastion and likes artsy unique games, but still need some gameplay and story and not feeling overly artsy this game is great and goes on sale fairly often. Highly recommended.

Just a quick few sentences on plans for the rest of the year.. I am still hoping to get a Switch with Zelda, Mario, Mario Cart, and some of the indies and rpgs that are coming to Switch...Part of that plan will be reliant on my wife being okay with jumping into owning another console, this stuff does get expensive. I am excited to play games with my daughter and family and some of the Nintendo games and with the little wii-motes I think that this system will be much easier for her to figure out and enjoy.  The three big blockbuster type games that I am hoping to buy at full price this year are Shadow of War (I loved the first one and am super surprised that no other developer has taken the nemesis system and used it), Battlefront II (I have loved every Battlefront so far, with the addition of a campaign no reason to think I wouldn't love this one just as much), and Destiny II (Pound for Pound I think Destiny had the best most complete, responsive, balanced, and well done gun play and game play of any game I have played in recent memory. The only issue was the storyline was obviously weak, and none of my friends stuck with it to play the DLC which I have heard nothing but good things about. So actually very much looking forward to Destiny II).

Lastly, I am still really excited to see what the Scorpio will be, my money is still on it being essentially a PC with the Xbox name and exclusives attached. I go into a lot more detail on a blog post a few weeks ago.

That is about it I think... Bye bye.
